I am interested in the customs involved in the preservation of biodiversity. I anticipate understanding the affects involved in the increased interaction of humans and species and additionally research the effects of the rise in invasive species on the overall ecosystem. Understanding the key elements involved in the designation of endangered species could open doors to new research outcomes, such as preemptive techniques to withdraw species from endangerment. Currently, I have focused on the development of conservation participation for businesses and hope to spread sustainability and environmental awareness throughout the workforce.
My name is Celeste Delaune and I am currently an undergraduate student studying Conservation Biology and Ecology with a minor in Sustainability. I am interested in marine conservation in a changing climate, specifically the effects of anthropogenic pollutants on marine invertebrates in coastal ecosystems. My journey started when I studied abroad in Australia and took courses in oceanography and marine invertebrate biology, even delving a little into astrobiology. The next summer I worked in Montana studying aquatic microbial ecology in Glacier National Park, and then continued my research here at ASU where I studied carbon flux in Proterozoic oceans through the behavioral mechanisms of the marine cyanobacterium Prochlorococcus.
I’m currently working on my honors thesis, a project in which I am measuring the effects of sustainable coffee farming practices on biodiversity in the Alto Mayo region of Peru. I spent this past summer working with Conservation International in Peru, where I was better able to understand how coffee is cultivated and manufactured, as well as how each of the coffee-growing steps affects the surrounding environment. Through camera trap results and analyzing shade distribution and jungle density on the coffee farms, I hope to determine the relationship between the anthropogenic impacts of sustainable farming and the surrounding tropical biome.
I completed my undergraduate degree in Conservation Biology and Ecology at Arizona State University and I’m currently exploring my options to further study population modeling. My interest is in the quantitative dynamics of species, particularly those of large carnivores.
